Justice Madan Lokur becomes new chairman of United Nations Internal Justice Council

Why in the news?

  • Recently, former Chief Justice of India Madan B Lokur has been appointed as the Chairman of the United Nations Internal Justice Council.
  • Apart from him, other members of the council-
    • Uruguay- Ms. Carmen Artigas
    •  Australia- Ms. Rosalie Balkin
    •  Austria- Mr. Stefan Brezina
    •  United States- Mr. Jay Pozzenell
  • He will serve in this post till 12 November 2028.
  • Lokur was nominated as a judge of the SC on June 4, 2012.
  • On reaching the age of retirement, he resigned on December 30, 2018.
  • Lokur joined the Supreme Court of Fiji in the year 2019 as a judge of its non-resident panel.
  • He became the first Indian judge to get appointment in the Supreme Court of another country.
