Amolops siju

  • Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered a new species of Cascade Ranid frog in the Siju cave located in the South Garo Hills of Meghalaya. This new species has been named Amolops siju.
  • For the second time a species of frog has been discovered from a cave in India. It is the fourth new subspecies of the Cascade Ranid species. Cascades are such frogs that live in small waterfalls or flowing mountain streams.
  • Currently there are more than 70 known species in the genus Amolops of the Renidae family, which is one of the largest groups of frogs.
  • Cascade Rainidae species are widely found from Northeast and North India, Nepal, Bhutan, Indochina region to Malaya Peninsula.
