'Apatani' is a famous textile weaving method of Arunachal Pradesh. The weaving on these clothes is done by the local 'Apatani tribe' people.
Apatani cloth is known for its 'geometric patterns' and 'angular designs'. These are woven for various rituals and cultural festivals and for wearing on general occasions as well.
The fabrics woven by them mainly include shawls (jig-jero) and jackets (supuntarii). Organic dyes are used for dyeing these fabrics, which are made by mixing various elements obtained from plants.
An application has been submitted before Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai for grant of 'Geographical Indication' (GI) tag to Apatani textile product in December 2021.
It is noteworthy that the Apatani tribe is also known for its 'fish-cum-paddy farming' model.
