Deinococcus radiodurans is a bacterium capable of surviving in harsh climatic conditions.
It is one of the most radiation resistant organisms yet known, hence it has been given the nickname 'Conan the Bacterium'. It can also protect itself from cold, dehydration, vacuum and acid.
The chromosomes and plasmid of this bacterium are linked together, which keeps them ready for repair after intense radiation.
Researchers have found this bacterium to be particularly suitable for living on Mars.
