Global Methane Initiative

  • Global Methane Initiative is a voluntary international partnership. It was initiated in the year of 2004. Many countries including India are its members. Along with the government, private sector, development bank, non-governmental organization etc are also enjoined in it.
  • This forum works towards reducing global anthropogenic methane emission through partnership between developed and developing economies. It mainly concentrates to the three main methane emitter sectors coal, petroleum and biogas.
  • It provides technical assistance for the construction of the projects generating energy from methane and solves the obstacles coming in it.
  • Methane emission is a big concern because it is 25-28 times more harmful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.
