Losar festival is a major socio-religious festival celebrated on the occasion of Ladakhi New Year.
The festival lasts for 15 days and includes prayers to gods and goddesses, dances and songs in honour of the ibex (a special kind of goat) and a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.
Under this, the New year is welcomed with ibex made of flour, replicas of sun and moon and colorful auspicious signs on the walls of the kitchen.
On its eve a procession called Metho is taken out, in which people chant holy slogans carrying burning torches. It is believed that all evil spirits run away from this procession.
