  • Traditional Majuli mukhauta of Assam given Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • These handmade mukhautas are traditionally used to portray characters in dramatic performances with bhaona or devotional messages under the Neo-Vaishnava tradition started by the 15th-16th century reformer saint Srimanta Sankardeva.
  • These mukhautas can depict gods, goddesses, demons, animals and birds.
  • Their size can range from covering only the face (Mukh  mukhauta) to covering the entire head and body of the performer (Cho mukhauta)
