Traditional Majuli mukhauta of Assam given Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
These handmade mukhautas are traditionally used to portray characters in dramatic performances with bhaona or devotional messages under the Neo-Vaishnava tradition started by the 15th-16th century reformer saint Srimanta Sankardeva.
These mukhautas can depict gods, goddesses, demons, animals and birds.
Their size can range from covering only the face (Mukhmukhauta) to covering the entire head and body of the performer (Chomukhauta)
