  • Squirrels, Gambian pouched rats, dormice, monkeys etc. are carriers of this virus.
  • This infectious disease is caused by monkeypox virus (MPXV).
    • It is a species of Orthopoxvirus genus.
    • This virus was first identified in monkeys in the year 1958.
  • It is spread to humans through physical contact with an infected person, contaminated foods, or infected animals.
  • Its symptoms are body rashes, enlarged lymph nodes, fever etc.
