Uru is a wooden ‘dhow’ (ship or sailing vessel) made mainly of Malabar teak without using any modern technology.
The art and technique of making these ships originated from Arab and the Arabs named it dhow.
The existence of this traditional handicraft of Beypore (Kerala) is more than 2000 years old and the main classes associated with its manufacture are Odayi and Khalasi.
Beypore Uru is a symbol of Kerala's trade relations and friendship with the Gulf countries. There has been a demand for Geographical Indication for this.
