Zika virus

  • It is a mosquito-borne flavivirus.
  • Mainly spread by the bite of Aedes aegypti mosquito.
  • It also spreads through pregnancy, sexual contact, blood transfusion etc.
  • It was first identified in monkeys in Uganda in the year 1947.
  • In the year 1952, it was identified in humans in Uganda and Tanzania.
  • Its symptoms are fever, rash, headache, red eyes, muscle pain etc.
  • Recently Zika virus was confirmed in mosquitoes of Chikkaballapura, Karnataka.
