Full Functional Literacy in Ladakh

Why in News?

• Recently Ladakh has been declared as the administrative unit to achieve full functional literacy.
• Ladakh has achieved full functional literacy under ULLAAS-Nav Bharat Literacy Programme.

ULLAAS Scheme:

• The ‘ULLAAS’ model is based on volunteerism, in which the volunteers register through the ‘ULLAAS’ mobile app and teach only non-literates without expecting any reward
• The duration of this scheme is from the year 2022-2027
• Objective-
  • To empower adults aged 15 years and above
    • Who cannot afford proper schooling.
    • It not only allows learners to acquire reading, writing and arithmetic skills but also enriches them with an understanding of important life skills, which encourages lifelong learning
• ULLAAS scheme is being implemented through promoting the spirit of voluntarism, social responsibility and sense of duty.
• Beneficiaries of ULLAAS scheme-
  • More than 77 lakh people have benefited across the country.
  • More than 1.29 crore learners and 35 lakh volunteer teachers have benefited from the ‘ULLAAS’ mobile app.
