India-Singapore Maritime Bilateral Exercise - SIMBEX 2025

Why in news ?

  • Recently, Indian Navy warships have reached Singapore, where they will participate in the 32nd Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) to be held later this month.
  • Four indigenous warships are participating from India's side -
    • INS Delhi
    • INS Satpura
    • INS Kiltan
    • INS Shakti
  • These ships are commanded by Rear Admiral Sushil Menon, Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Fleet.

Introduction to SIMBEX

  • SIMBEX is an annual maritime military exercise between India and Singapore which started in the year 1994.
  • It was earlier known as "Lion King Exercise".
  • This exercise was started with the aim of increasing trust, mutual coordination and operational capability between the navies of the two countries.
  • The exercise usually takes place in two phases-
  • First, Harbour Phase, which includes joint planning, professional talks and cultural exchange at the port.
  • Second, Sea Phase, which includes maneuvers at sea, surveillance, air and surface operations and Search & Rescue (SAR) exercises.
  • The main objective of this exercise is to strengthen maritime security, develop cooperation in combating non-state threats such as piracy, smuggling and terrorism and ensure free, secure and rule-based sea routes in the Indo-Pacific region.
