Introduction to SIMBEX
SIMBEX is an annual maritime military exercise between India and Singapore which started in the year 1994.
It was earlier known as "Lion King Exercise".
This exercise was started with the aim of increasing trust, mutual coordination and operational capability between the navies of the two countries.
The exercise usually takes place in two phases-
First, Harbour Phase, which includes joint planning, professional talks and cultural exchange at the port.
Second, Sea Phase, which includes maneuvers at sea, surveillance, air and surface operations and Search & Rescue (SAR) exercises.
The main objective of this exercise is to strengthen maritime security, develop cooperation in combating non-state threats such as piracy, smuggling and terrorism and ensure free, secure and rule-based sea routes in the Indo-Pacific region.
