India develops first indigenous MRI machine

Why in news?

Recently India has developed its first indigenous Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.

About Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):

  • It is a non-invasive medical technique.
  • It provides detailed images of the internal organs, tissues and structures of the body.
  • It uses strong magnetic fields radio waves and computer technology.
  • It will be installed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi by October.
  • Objectives:
    • Reduce treatment costs
    • Reduce dependence on imported medical equipment
    • Promote indigenous medical technology
  • Key features:
    • 1.5 Tesla MRI machine: It will help make India self-reliant in medical technology.
    • 80-85% of India's medical equipment requirements are still met through imports.
    • Developed in collaboration with SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research).
    • Aims to reduce MRI cost by 50%.

    • Brain & Spine examination
    • Heart & blood vessels
    • Bones & joints
    • Internal organ examination
    • Cancer detection
