The Defence Ministry has announced that the third Nilgiri class warship 'Himgiri' built under Project 17A has been formally inducted into the Indian Navy.

Key features of Project 17A frigate
- It is a versatile multi-mission warship, designed for various maritime operations.
- It is part of the Nilgiri class, the most modern frigate series of the Indian Navy.
- 'Himgiri' is the third warship of this class and the first ship of this series built at GRSE, Kolkata.
- It has been designed by Warship Design Bureau (WDB).
- Modular construction technology has been adopted in it, which has brought speed and efficiency in the construction process.
- The construction work has been completed in a timely manner, which reflects the capability of naval construction.
- It has stealth capabilities, allowing it to evade enemy radar detection.
- This modern warship has been indigenously developed under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' campaign.
- It is capable of maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, air defence etc.
Himgiri: A glorious rebirth
- The new INS Himgiri is the modern reincarnation of the erstwhile Leander-class INS Himgiri.
- The old Himgiri was decommissioned on 6 May 2005 after serving the nation for 30 years.
- The new Himgiri embodies the spirit of the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan and is a milestone in the direction of indigenous warship construction.
