According to the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report, 2021 released by the Registrar General of the Government of India on May 7, 2025, key maternal and child health indicators are improving significantly in India.

Key Findings of the Report: Achievements (2014–2021)
- Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): According to the report, the trend of decline in infant mortality indicators continued. Infant mortality rate in the country has declined from 39 per 1000 births in 2014 to 27 per 1000 births in 2021.
- Neonatal Mortality Rate (NMR): Neonatal mortality rate has declined from 26 per 1000 births in the year 2014 to 19 per 1000 births in 2021.
- Under-five mortality rate (U5MR): Under-five mortality rate has declined from 45 per 1000 births in 2014 to 31 per 1000 births in 2021.
- Sex ratio at birth: It has improved from 899 in 2014 to 913 in 2021.
- Total fertility rate (TFR): Total fertility rate is stable at 2.0 in 2021 which is a significant improvement from 2.3 in 2014.
States achieving SDG targets as per the report
- Maternal mortality ratio (≤ 70 per lakh live births by 2030): These 8 states include Kerala (20), Maharashtra (38), Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Karnataka (63).
- Under-five mortality rate (≤ 25 per 1000 live births by 2030): 12 States/UTs viz. Kerala, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Punjab, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat.
- Neonatal mortality rate (≤ 12 per 1000 live births by 2030): 6 States/UTs viz. Kerala, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh.
