Why in news?

India has been elected as the Vice President of the International Maritime Navigation Aid Association (IALA) in Singapore.

Key Points:

  • The first General Assembly of IALA was held in Singapore from 18 to 21 February 2025, where India was elected Vice President.
  • It underlines India’s strong leadership and contribution in maritime affairs, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and safe maritime navigation.
  • Shri T.K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways led the Indian delegation at the Assembly.
  • The Assembly also marks its transition from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to an intergovernmental organisation (IGO).
  • India will host the IALA Council Meeting in December 2025 and the IALA Conference and General Assembly in Mumbai in September 2027.

International Maritime Navigation Aids Association (IALA):

  • It is an international organisation dedicated to the coordination and standardisation of aids to maritime navigation. 
  • It was established in the year 1957 as a non-governmental organisation (NGO).
  • Its objectives:
  • To collect and provide maritime expertise and advice
  • To harmonise global maritime navigation systems
  • To promote maritime safety initiatives
  • To address emerging challenges towards the protection of the environment
