'TALASH' initiative launched by NESTS and UNICEF

Why in news?

  • National Tribal Students Education Society (NESTS) and UNICEF India have launched TALASH (Tribal Aptitude, Life Skills and Self-Esteem Hub), an innovative digital platform for tribal students.
  • The initiative aims to develop over 1.38 lakh tribal students studying in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) holistically through skills, self-esteem and career guidance.
  • Additionally, in partnership with Tata Motors and Ex-Navodayan Foundation, NESTS has also launched employment skills training and competitive exam coaching.

Implementation status

  • Initially, 189 teachers from 75 EMRSs have been trained.
  • By December 2025, the initiative will be implemented across all EMRSs in 28 states and 8 union territories.

Objectives of TALASH Initiative

  • To guide tribal students according to their interest, ability and skills.
  • To promote career selection, life skills and self-confidence.
  • To empower tribal students personally and professionally in line with the goals of NEP 2020.

Key Components of TALASH

  • Psychometric Assessments
    • Assessment of interest and ability of students on the lines of NCERT's 'Tamanna' initiative.
    • Students are given Career Cards based on their results.
  • Career Counseling
    • Suggestion of appropriate career options in line with the student's interests and abilities.
    • Trained teachers lead this process.
  • Life Skills and Self-Esteem Training
    • Skills such as self-motivation, emotional intelligence, communication skills, and problem solving are developed. 
  • Training and e-learning portal for teachers
    • Teachers will now be able to provide psychological guidance and development to students in a better way.
