Krasheninnikov Volcano, located in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, erupted for the first time in more than 500 years.

About Krasheninnikov Volcano

  • Location: Krasheninnikov Volcano is located in Russia's eastern volcanic region (part of the Ring of Fire) where there are about 300 volcanoes and according to NASA's Earth Observatory, 29 of them are still active.
  • Previous eruption: The last time lava erupted from this volcano was 475 years ago in about 1550.
  • Cause of eruption: Scientists say that it may be related to the recent 8.8 magnitude earthquake, due to which tsunami warnings were issued in places like Japan and Hawaii.
    • This volcano is located in the Kamchatka Peninsula, which was the epicenter of the earthquake.
  • Eruption intensity: The ash cloud rose 6 km in the air. and lava flowed up to 2.7 km from the southwestern side of the volcano.

About Global Volcanism Program (GVP)

  • Introduction: Global Volcanism Program (GVP) is an initiative run by the Department of Mineral Sciences of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., to study the world's active volcanoes and their eruptions.
  • Objective: To document, understand, and disseminate volcanic eruptions of the last 12,000 years (Holocene epoch) in order to assess risks and benefits.
  • Main functions:
    • Reporting: Information on current eruptions through the Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report and Monthly Bulletin.
    • Collection: Database of 1,432 active volcanoes, including location, eruption dates, and geological information.
    • Research: Research on volcanic processes and products.
    • Outreach: Awareness on volcanic risks and safety through global cooperation.
  • Features:
    • 44 volcanoes currently active (as of July 17, 2025)
    • Countries with most volcanoes: USA, Japan, Indonesia, Russia, Chile
    • 713 Holocene volcanoes in the Pacific Ring of Fire (56% of total 1,264)
